We have continued "being" carpenters and the new addition to the Silver Sage Gallery is really shaping up. The ceiling is now suspended and in place. Walls painted. Lights mostly up. And our back storage-work room finished. The front window displays are in and have received excellent comments from the general public. Our landlord has finished the outside log canopy. Awaiting carpet which we hope to be soon. Have even hung some art work on the new walls. We are really happy with the way things have shaped up. Here is my Painting-A-Day

for today. It is a 6"x6 1/2" watercolor of the Pinnacles as viewed from the Moccasin Basin area west of Dubois, Wyoming. The days last light has cast a mystical haze over the volcanic peaks. Early fall has painted the willows along the Wind River, just a small stream at this point, a dull orange with purple shadows.

After nearly three weeks playing carpenter I am back to painting and adding to my daily paintings ritual. This is a 6 1/2"x8" watercolor painting of cottonwoods from over in Jackson Hole from my research last fall.

Our gallery remodeling continues with my pardners and myself putting in many hours to accomplish our project befor the real season begins. Usually by May 1. We have installed 2 window displays faced with old barnwood and lighted from above. Doors need to be put on yet and log facing but we are excited with the way it is shaping up

. The girls are nearly finished with painting on walls and we have a number of small projects yet to finish. The ceiling is to be installed next weekend and carpeting is ordered.

I have just received word that my Acrylic painting, Indian Paintbrush, 11"x14" has been chosen for an illustration in the upcoming cookbook produced by the Casper Star Tribune, Wyomings newspaper. The book will feature art and photography by some of the top artists in the state

After 2 years of prompting our landlord is building an awning with log supports that will extend from our gallery and the Drug Store next door. It will be a grat addition and fits into the other overhang log awnings up and down the main street. Along with the towns boardwalks and false fronts it is a real draw to the visitor. The tourists and Dude ranch enthusiasts fall in love with our little town and this will be even more for them to talk about. I'll post another pix when it is completed along with our project. We are also planning to put in two shadow box displays in the windows yet this spring. It is definitely cutting into our painting time but going to be well worth it.

The other wing wall with Tom Lucas, my pardners art work displayed. We think it is a nice addition to the gallery this spring.

I have been busy along with my pardners in the Silver Sage Gallery here in Dubois, Wyoming with a major remodeling project. This spring we added 2 new wing walls and acquired the back garage area we are now turning into Gallery space. This is a view of "In progress construction" looking towards the existing gallery. We started the gallery 2 years ago and it has been a fun and worthwhile venture. There are 4 artists in this adventure along with some consigned work. Besides myself there is Bud Boler, who does sculpture and is an extraordinare artist. If you have ever been in Jackson, Wyoming, Buds bronze of the bucking horse adorns the town square there. Tom Lucas is not only a great painter of indian still lifes but is also a master at recreating indian artifacts. Some of which could be considered a lost art. Chris Phelps does the most amazing silver and turquois jewelry of her own design and is even featured on the World Trade Center website. She also does some great bronze work. Dubois is an amazing place with a number of nationally known artists, writers and photographers

This is my addition from my Painting a day project. It is a 6"x8" watercolor of Two Ocean Peak and Blackrock Creek which flows west from the continental divide west of Dubois. Wyoming eventually emptying into the Buffalo River and then the Snake River in Jackson Hole. It can be great fishing.
I have been sidelined the last week on my painting projects as I am busy doing a major remodel project on my little Gallery in Dubois in anticipation[regardless of the upcoming forcast of a recession]of a great summer season.

Our March weather remains typical for us. Everyone is complaining about the weather so that is an indication that it is normal. The mountains are getting good snows but we could use a little more around here. The last few days have been on again off again blizzard conditions for 10 minutes then clearing off. Today is especially cold and will not get to freezing. I did a little photographing above the studio including this shot of the Ramshorn Peak between snow squalls.

A painting depicting the Buffalo River as it snakes along its Willow covered bottomlands after its tumuluous descent out of the Teton Wilderness on its way to Join the Snake River at Moran Jct. Spring does not really exist in our area. If it does it is on July 5th then summer begins July 6. I know this is a fact when I see snow falling on most July 4th's. This year is no exception. Global warming and all. I have been hitting it pretty hard between painting and working at some remodeling projects at my gallery, Silver Sage Gallery in Dubois. My wife and I did take some time off to go for an afternoon hike yesterday along the East Fork River N E of Town. Although we were dressed in winter attire and even felt the wind chill along the cottonwood bottoms of the river it was pleasant to just get out and see what is happening. Lots of Mule Deer around and signs of Elk that spent some time here this past winter. We even carried bear spray just in case. Grizzlies are just coming out of hibernation and it is good insurance to have that with you. Lots of beaver sign in the area and it is interesting to see how they are contributing to the ecological well being of the river bottom. By the time we leave the clouds are thickening and snow showers are falling on both the Wind River mountains to the south and the Absarokas to the north. During the night we do get an inch. Not much but a gentle reminder that winter is sure a lot closer than Spring?

Other subject matter that is in the immediate area includes the nations largest Bighorn Sheep herd. Wolves and thousands of Elk also call Dubois home. Living on the River I have many songbirds and waterfowl just out my studio window. It all makes for the perfect life.

From my studio I have many visitors to accompany me as I go about my work. They are all a pleasant diversion. This cottontail has become a real welfare case and is waiting in the morning for his daily carrot. We began the winter with 4 rabbits around but with two neighborhood Great Horned Owls this little fellow[gal]is the lone survivor. Bobcats and coyotes are also a challenge from him and I have seen both around the yard. Have had a cougar now and then in the area but have not seen one around the immediate yard. Eagles and hawks are also visitors. Had a black bear a few years ago and a grizzly down river from us also several years ago. Mule Deer are frequent visitors and we used to have Moose as regular occupants up to about 5 or 6 years ago but with the incresased building with newcomers moving into our area that has changed. The new folks seem to love cutting the willows and other food and cover that wildlife need. Trying to get things just like it was back home. They love it here then try altering it. I don't understand their thinking.

I have gone back to work on my Cougar painting and spent most of the day detailing and adjusting values. After a few days of drying I will get to the detailing of the cougar himself.

I have spent the day working on my Cougar commission. It is pretty well blocked in and I have begun detailing both the Cougar and the rocks. I have begun working on reflective lights back into the shadows of the rock. The stream cascading is also beginning to take shape. The painting is now at a point where I'll have to give it a few days of drying befor progressing any further.

I have finished the Doe and two fawns in the morning Aspens but in asking several people their opinions of that and this painting. THE HUNTER AND THE HUNTED, which is an oil painting I am about decided to enter this in the show rather than the Deer. Would like any other opinions from anyone viewing this. I have only a few days to decide.

I have been spending a lot of time on this painting and have it down to maybe two more sittings. I did change a few things from last posting. Deleting and a little addition. Have yet to do a little more detail and value rendering on the deer and the foreground vegetation but am pleased with the composition and lighting. Deadline is getting close to enter this in the show I am painting this piece for but should make it fine.

I have gotten back to work on my cougar painting. blocking in the cougar with color and have begun detailing the rocks behind and on left side. Next sitting will be more work on cat and beginning work on the water. This is the point that becomes a little tedious and mechanical and takes a lot of stick-to-itness.

I spent the afternoon working on the aspens and the spruce tree to the right and the area of meadow and grasses under and behind the right side aspens. This morning Vicki and I have to run over to Jackson with a dinner[lunch]appointment with an artist friend of ours who is there from Scottsdale skiing. It will be great fun to see Devin. Devin is a constant companion artist on my teaching pack trips during the summer and a fine watercolor artist. Her journals and journal art are outstanding.
Will then get back to this painting. I will start working on the deer next and probably finish blocking out the foreground grasses.

I know I had promised to show progressive work some time ago on the cougar painting I had started but had to put it aside to finish some other projects. I am now ready to get back to work on both it and this new piece, June Morning which I am working on to enter in an upcoming show. It is a 20"x30" Gouache watrcolor. Watch it progress, and, very soon the Cougar painting.

This is a commissioned Oil Painting with the view looking down on Bear Creek which is N E of Dubois. Image size is 30"x40". Was challenging but enjoyable to do with the myriads of wildflowers involved. Dominated by blue Lupine and the Wyoming state flower, Indian Paintbrush which is a parasitic flower. I have thrown in some yellow violets and white lousewort.
Now it is-get busy time-on the 3d commission I am doing which I posted incomplete some time ago. BOMBER BASIN COUGAR. I will be posting on days I work on it so you can watch the progress as it evolves.
It is August and I have just sold this painting to a collector from Florida. I think it has found a good home.

After a month of painting, I have finally completed two of the three major commission paintings I have been working on. This is a view of the meadows and ranch house of Bert and Leigh Tuckey east of Dubois on the Wind River Reservation. It is a beautiful ranch area and would like to do a number of other paintings from this ranch. This is an oil painting image size 24"x36".

This is a small oil painting I have just completed. 8"x16" JAKEYS FORK MULE DEER It is one of the small paintings I work on between the 3 or 4 larger pieces I am constantly painting. It is a diversion from these more demanding paintings and something to do as I await drying time on the larger pieces.

Have not accomplished a lot this week as I have come down with a pretty good chest cold and just trying to nurse it and take things easy. Am slowly working as I feel like it on a small oil painting. It is a good day to stay in with the temperature at 16 and snow and wind howling outside.

Finished. This is a gouache watercolor painting 15"x18 1/2". I chose to do a summer scene of Aspens, Boedicker Butte, which is a volcanic peak to the north of Dubois and wildflowers. Thought with the cold weather and snow we have been having this might be a peaceful diversity. In the background is one of my limited edition prints, Mountain Bluebirds. In addition to selling the quickdraw at auction I sold it as well. Also sold an Indian Paintbrush print. My auctioned piece went 2nd highest so must have been a good choice of subject. Is a long way home with rivers to cross and miles to go so we left about 9:30 and were home just befor midnight. A fun and productive evening.

The Riverton Winter Carnival was held this past saturday evening and in conjunction with many events was the Quick-Draw. 25 artists from the region all created a piece of art in a 45 minute time frame which were then auctioned off on a 70-30 split with the artists receiving 70%. It is a fun event though tedious and somewhat stressful for many. I have done so many of these over the years I find it great fun. Here I am nearing the end with final brush strokes. The crowd was great and very supportive of all the artists. There were some great pieces done.
