For Sheila who asked me to post a picture of the painting I did for the last Jackson Hole Fall Art Festival quick-draw held every year in the town square in Jackson, Wyoming. It was a Gouache Watercolor painting of the Grand Tetons from Schwabachers Landing on the Snake River. The matting on the painting is not textured but rather caught the reflection of the tree leaves on the glass. Interesting anyway.

Wow Gary!!! That is amazing that you were able to paint such a gorgeous painting that large in an hour! I bet you were as cool as a cucumber during the competition 'cause I would have been sweating bullets and ruining any paint I laid down worrying about the time.

The reflection is cool... the canvas almost appears to be floating. Thanks Gary! You're a true gentleman.

Thanks Sheila. It can be a little nerve wracking and often times people ask me what I am going to paint. I have a general idea but if I thought about it I'd probably get pretty nervous so I've found if I don't even think about it I do a lot better. I know a few artists that befor a Quick-Draw will practice a painting over and over befor hand. They are nervous wrecks. If you had known me as a kid and even into college I never could have done this. I invented the word shy. Mayb our Lord saw I was too dumb to do anything else in life so that He better calm things out for me.

What a beautiful painting! And you did this in 1 hour!! It's totally awesome. It usually takes me about 6 hours to do a small painting (2.5 x 3.5 inches).
Gary, thanks for visiting my blog. Have a great day. ~Akiko

Oh Gary, do tell more about the quick draw. Did you all do it from photos at the same location in the town square or spread out and return an hour later ? I just returned from a plein air day and it took me hours with no show stopping result. But it's been awhile since I've been outta the studio so to speak. Would love to see this one closer!

It is all done on laocation. I use a photo but do a lot of artistic liscencing for it. As do most of the other artists. There are about 23 artists participating and many are of the Who's Who in the western, Wildlife, Landscape art world so it is an honor to be among this group. The whole week of the Fall Arts Festival is quite a deal with a large miniature show held at the National Wildlife Art Museum, Big Gallery Open Houses and Nationally known artists featured. The Art For The Parks Show was also part of this event held at the Jackson Lake Lodge but that show got into trouble and is no longer. The Susan K Black Workshop is held at this same time frame in Dubois and there are over 100 artists out in the hills all painting away with international instruction going on. People like John Seery Lester, Greg Beecham,[who is from Dubois],Kaylon Baugh, John Pitcher[an incredible artist now from Maine],Lee Cable, and many others serve as instructors.
